Breaking Brief

Before a company files, its own accounts and the official registers often show the signal first. When I find at least three serious signs not yet in the news, I send a Breaking Brief, with my analysis and my advice. Then I follow it every day.

LiveWire, Harley-Davidson’s electric motorcycle company, warned of “substantial doubt” it can keep going, while a Paris court rules on BHV Marais this afternoon.

  • BHV Marais · −95.3 · Filed · France

A department store on the rue de Rivoli in Paris, open since 1856, selling mostly home, DIY and decoration.

Management and staff representatives both asked the court for the rescue at a closed hearing. The store stays open while the court decides.

  • Galeria · −93.3 · Filed · Germany

    A German department-store chain with 83 stores.

It has signed a loan to keep goods flowing during the procedure, and an adviser is looking for a buyer. Its administrator expects that not all 83 stores can continue.

  • Migatronic · −100.0 · Bankrupt · Denmark

Designs and builds welding machines and automated welding systems in North Jutland.

A welding-machine maker founded in 1970, it lost almost 49 million kroner over three years, Nordjyske reports. About 165 people at its headquarters were sent home, and its foreign subsidiaries keep trading.

…and 15 more, each with its sources and its 5-minute story.

Why the powerful study the fallen

I spent more than ten years inside Nokia, including the years it fell.

Most business books study the winners. But the losers often did the same things: the bold bets, the big hires, the long hours.

Winners show you what's possible. The fallen show you what's fatal.

The fatal list is surprisingly short. Too much debt. Too little cash. One customer. One plan that stopped working.

Most companies don't die of surprise. They die of the obvious, ignored.

Think of a car with its warning light on for two years. The crash surprises only the driver.

Study the fallen. They paid for the lesson, so you don't have to.— Max Noble
