A notice to appoint administrators has been filed for Poundland

On Thursday afternoon a notice reached the High Court in London, giving Poundland ten working days of protection from the people it owes.

“Poundland says every shop is open as normal. I think the next ten working days decide how many open at Christmas.”— Max Noble

Reported by Reuters on 29 October, and the same day by RTÉ, ITV and The Guardian.

No administrators had been appointed when I wrote this, early on 30 October. AlixPartners is reported as the proposed administrator. Reports differ on whether the directors or the owner filed the notice.

On Thursday 29 October, early in the afternoon, a notice of intention to appoint administrators was filed for Poundland at the High Court. It gives the company ten working days in which creditors cannot take action against it.

Poundland opened its first shop in Burton upon Trent in 1990. Today it runs about 600 shops in the UK and, as Dealz, in Ireland. About 12,000 people work there, reports say.

Its owner, Gordon Brothers, bought it for £1 last year and started a sale in early September. More than 100 shops have closed in the past year. This week the owner turned down an offer for the whole chain, which management had backed.

Its managing director, Barry Williams, said it had not been possible to find an acceptable offer for the business as a whole. He said several established retailers had made formal offers. Rivals are reported to be interested in parts of the chain.

Poundland says every shop is open and trading as normal. A deal for the whole could still come within the ten working days. I will update this page when administrators are appointed.
