Will L'Oréal cut the carbon from what it buys by 28% by 2030?
The new promise28% less CO2 from what it buys, by 2030.
Max Noble Odds: 15% chance he keeps it. The unlikely answer pays more.
The small print, in plain words
- He promised
- In 2022 L’Oréal borrowed money and made three promises for 2025: 14% less CO2 for every product sold, green power at all its sites, and half its plastic packaging recycled. Miss one, and it pays the lenders extra.
- He got
- Plastic: 50%, just made it. Green power: yes, but gas leaked from cooling machines at six sites, so that promise was missed. CO2 per product: down 5%, not 14%. The fine: about €3 million.
- Why, says the company
- L’Oréal says it sold other products than planned, and its suppliers cut their CO2 too slowly.
- How bad
- Severe. Two of three promises missed. The fine, about €3 million, is small for a company that earns about €6 billion a year. Score 0.0 → −5.3.
