A court has opened a six-month observation period; it has not ordered a liquidation. The court-appointed administrators had not been named in the pages I opened, early on 4 November.

On Tuesday 3 November the Tribunal de commerce de Toulouse placed GiFi in a redressement judiciaire, at the company’s own request of 20 October. It is a court-led rescue: old debts are frozen while the shops keep trading.

GiFi began in 1981 as one discount shop on the edge of Villeneuve-sur-Lot, in south-west France. It now sells low-priced decorations, craft supplies and seasonal goods in 513 shops.

Management had declared that the company could no longer pay its debts as they fell due, Capital reports. According to the court’s figures, as AFP reported them, GiFi expected a trading profit of about €9 million for 2025 and made a loss of about €100 million.

The company blames a computer system rolled out from 2023 that disrupted buying, stock and deliveries, a weak summer and cheaper rivals. Sales fell 9.6% in July and 3.9% in August, Capital reports.

The observation period lasts six months. On 8 January 2027 the court will check whether GiFi has the money to carry on.
